As an artist, you like to spend the majority of your time creating art, but in order for the entire world to see your creations you need a website and targeted traffic. Once you have your site, how do you get visitors that are interested in your particular style and medium?

A great approach that invites surfers to your web site is to write articles about your style of art and then publish them in article directories. These types of articles are sought after by webmasters to add to their websites or send out to their email lists.

At the bottom of your article you can put a resource box, that lists your credentials and one or two links back to your website. Publishing articles like this can get you a lot of targeted traffic and can help you in a couple of ways.

First off, writing a decent informative article will establish you as an expert in your area. When you brainstorm topics for your article be sure you write an informative piece of interest - not just a sales pitch.

If you do pet portraits, write an article about how to immortalize your pet through art. If you create pottery, perhaps you can write about different styles of pottery. No matter what kind of art you create, make sure that your article will grab the readers attention and compel them to click through to your site.

A second benefit is that you will be getting highly targeted one way links from everyone who publishes your article. This will become much more important in the future as the search engines decrease the value of reciprocal links. The links from articles will grow over time as more and more webmasters publish it on their site.

Of course, you want to get the most mileage out of each article you write so you want to submit the article to directories where it has the highest chance to be seen and published by webmasters who have a need for content in the art niche. There are many huge article directories with all kinds of topics and you should submit to those, but you should also submit to targeted niche directories such as ArtistsContent.com where your article will be seen by hundreds of webmasters who would love to add it to their sites!

Of course the main reason for writing the articles is to get traffic that will appreciate (and maybe even buy) your art! Your article could be viewed by hundreds when another webmaster publishes it on their site or mailed out to an email list, and if they like the way it is written or feel a connection to you, they may just click through to your site. Believe me, I get plenty of traffic from the articles I write and that traffic can translate into more sales.

Here's some tips on writing a great article that will help boost your art business:

    1. Give your audience and answer to a problem. You can get a lot of ideas about what to write about from the emails that people send you through your site - do they ask how they can develop their artistic skills? Then an article on the basics of sketching might be just the ticket. Another thing you can do is put up a poll on your site and ask the users directly what they want to learn more about.

    2. Use an attention grabbing headline. Get them to read the article with an interesting title, something like "Learn To Paint In 10 easy Steps" could compel any aspiring artist to click and read.

    3. Write in a conversational tone. Don't just spill out a bunch of dry facts, write like you talk. Go back through and read and edit. You want the article to flow nicely. Don't make it too long or too short either about 300 to 600 words is good.

    4. Use an outline to get organized. A lot of people get writers block when they sit down to start writing - sometimes just jotting down ideas in an outline form can help.

Follow these tips and submit to the right directories soon you may just have a few more clients that collect your art!
