Traveling is always inspiring and, if you are over fifty, even reinvigorating, but somewhat different.

Seniors like a short flight, the best seat at the lowest fare. We are willing to pay a little extra for the quickest flights with the shortest layovers. Traveling off season usually gets us bigger and better accommodations for longer periods of time for less money.

We also tend to protect ourselves and the prospect of having an enjoyable experience with the purchase of travel insurance much more than younger generations do. It must be that the experience of living has taught us how precious some moments are, so why taking the risk to ruin an otherwise memorable vacation?

There are so many incidents which can affect your wonderful traveling experience adversely; beside the most common like missing a flight you may suffer luggage loss, stolen money or property, injuries and nowadays even terrorism has been added to the list of inconveniencies.

By the way, notice that changes within the travel insurance industry have taken place as a result of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Finally some travel insurance companies provide coverage for terrorist attacks committed in the United States of America such as CSA Travel Protection (www.csatravelprotection.com). Prior to 9/11, travel insurance only covered terrorist attacks committed overseas.

Traveling outside of U.S. borders? Make sure, especially if you are going for a long stay that your medical insurance will apply should a medical malady occur while you are in Tanzania, for example. You may be surprised to find when you actually ask your insurance provider how little coverage you have when traveling beyond the U.S. Many insurance plans only cover physicians and care within certain network areas.

A big reminder for United States travelers; Medicare does not apply outside of the United States. Also, make sure your vaccinations are up to date before you travel. And depending on where in the world you may be traveling, know what types of inoculations you may require above and beyond those you already have.

In the event of a medical emergency, you would want to secure some transportation back home. Your health insurance plan may cover the emergency medical care, but it most likely will not pay for your transportation back home for continued care.

The best course of action for senior citizens who contemplate overseas travel and are considering travel medical insurance is to first peruse their current medical coverage. Seldom do these plans cover overseas travel but do check your policy and call your insurer if you are unsure.

If you want to save on your travel insurance premium the two best things you can do for yourself are to first book your trip with a travel agent you trust, and then choose an airline, cruise or other vacation vendor that is well known and financially sound.

Thinking of adding some additional security to your vacations you may want to consider that group traveling is the safest form and cheapest form of travel today. Being with a group ensures maximum safety even though you are thousand miles away from home, in case of any emergency help is there with you in the form of people in your group.

Traveling in a group is considerably safer and cost effective but it does not prevent accidents from happening, therefore you would still need the peace of mind of knowing that your travel insurance will cover the possibility of extraordinary expenses, especially those of medical nature.
