I have heard two sides of the same story time after time about the word balance. It's time I lay this whole thing to rest and explain what true balance is and how an understanding of it can help you to create the life of your dreams. Balance, based on webster's dictionary means: 1. state of rest due to equal leverage around a point or line. 2. state of harmony, stability, etc. 3. put in balance. You get the idea. Balance is basically a point of non-movement. A position that is completely in harmony with every other position around it. If you are to listen to some of the so called guru's out there, they will tell you that balance is important when it comes to personal-development. Yet others will tell you that balance is not good because it is a position of non-movement. It's hard to know which is right and which one to listen to. Well, both are right and both are wrong depending on how they view their concept of balance. Balance is good, but the ability to know when to be off balance while having the ability to become balanced when needed is better. See, here is the thing. One must be able to get to a point of balance in one's life. This is where the most peace and happiness lies. When we are out of balance, we are being pushed in one direction and that is the only direction we are able to move in unless we first slow ourselves, then stop ourselves, then begin moving in a different direction. Balance means that we are in a position that allows us to move in any direction we need to at will. The problem is that most people never find balance and are shoved around in their lives emtionally, mentally, or both as a tiny ship in a hurricane on the ocean. Getting to a point in your life where you are capable of having options and moving in numerous directions is what true balance is about. It's about opening yourself up to options, and having the ability to use those options based upon what is appropriate for this situation. Every situation has an appropriate solution, and being in a state of balance allows us to move in the direction we need to move when the timing is right. On the other hand, there are guru's out there that say we need to be in a constant state of non-balance because if we are on balance it means that we are not moving in any direction and remaining stagnant. This is also true, but what they often fail to mention is that we need to know what direction to move in before we can unbalance ourselves to move in that direction. If you are balanced, you are able to recognize that work needs to be done in a certain area because your mind is open and aware of what is going on. If you are moving in a certain direction, your awareness becomes focused on that direction and starts to miss other opportunities. The trick is to realize what direction you need to be moving in, and then unbalance yourself to move in that direction. Being off balance to create results is a good off balance, but having the ability to go back to center and again be balanced is also important as it may be the solution at any given moment. Another problem that so many people have when it comes to moving in the right direction is that they move in the wrong direction to fix a problem. For example, if your problem is that you are very compassionate and people walk on you, the solution is not to gently start working on not allowing people to walk all over you. The real solution is to swing so far to the opposite side of the spectrum that you are extremely uncomfortable. Start lashing out at people and become stuck in the mud for a while. Absolutely refuse to give people what they want. This is the quickest and easiest way to get to center where you are able to move in either direction. Once you have brought both sides of the spectrum into your personality, you then have the ability to go to center and be balanced and recognize when it is appropriate to stay put and refuse to give in, and when it is appropriate to give in and give others what they want. Be careful of the directions you move when you do unbalance yourself, and when you do move, move so far to the extreme opposite that it feels uncomfortable. So ultimately, the goal is to become unbalanced to the point that you are able to get the results you are looking for quickly to allow you to get to a position of balance again. Once you find a position of balance that is truly in the middle of both sides, then you will have both of those options for dealing with situations. The more balanced you become, the more options you have and the closer to freedom you get. The more unbalanced you become, the quicker the growth and the closer to being balanced and options you get. They go hand in hand, and one cannot be achieved without the other. One or the other is not the correct answer, a balance between the two is.
