To our recent knowledge Seabuckthorn has been used medicinally for over a 1000 years. There is plenty of qualified information available in current and ancient texts describing the usages of Seabuckthorn (SBT). One the best current sources is the science page on the website, www.seabuckthorn.com. The SBT plant is also used for environmental protection in relation to watersheds, soil erosion, songbirds and soil health. Again plenty of this information can be easily sourced on the net. SBT has been described as a 'near perfect plant' and it is thought that ancient botanists developed the extraordinary healing properties of the plant over time. Besides the 192 known bioactive constituents that make the SBT plant, it's the combination of these constituents that deliver the powerful healing properties. It's extremely challenging for our healing practitioners around the world to give us a detailed description of how we, as living organisms, are designed to work past the obvious known observations . We need water, light, air, touch, nurturing and a complex array of nutriment to survive, prosper and attain our potential. It is in this, 'complex array of nutriment', that delivers the power of SBT. Our body is still a 'new frontier' for discovery, as we witness everyday in articles of medical journals, newspapers, health magazines and other vehicles, as this article is written. To this writer it seems absurd to treat ailments with isolated vitamins and nutrients derived from plant or laboratory sources. " Take this pill and call me in the morning", whether it is a drug or 3 grams of vitamin C with a multivitamin, does not cut it as a path to good health. We would be more fortunate to have a practitioner that checks on the completeness of our diet, exercise program and our emotional support system. A person that will encourage us to see that our health is our responsibility and act accordingly with the resources to draw from. The keys to optimum nutriment are diverse bioactive constituents and absorbability. Although SBT is not the end all, it is very complete and should be supported with a diet of other good foods. Included in the 192 bioactive constituents are fatty acids, lipids, flavonoids, fat and water-soluble vitamins, phenols, protein, carotenoids, SOD, many minerals and other components such as xanthins and phytosterols. The absorbability of SBT seed oil is significant. The raw materials of SBT are the leaves, berry (with seed), bark and roots. The seed oil contains 22 fatty acids and 42 lipids and other extraordinary properties mentioned above. The vast percentage (60% to 80%), of the oil, is Omega 3 and Omega 6, in a critical ratio of 1: 1. This optimum balance is found naturally in no other plant. The ratio has been well studied and it has been discovered that this delicate balance regulates thousands of metabolic functions at the cellular level. Studies are easily attained. A simple test for absorbability can be done by anyone. Simple apply a drop of pure SBT seed oil on the skin and witness the result in seconds. Seabuckthorn is used for acute skincare, gastrointestinal ailments, cardiovascular support, hormonal balancing and neurological challenges. Recently, SBT has been described in the treatment for Rosacea in the report; Rosacea and Seabuckthorn - Cause and Effect Doug Kalman has written this article.
