Heartburn Meets King Tut

By: Gilbey Scott

Was heartburn looking over your shoulder when you pushed away from the table, after that big meal? The meal where the whole family is there and everyone brought a dish? You knew right away you had heartburn to deal with. It’s times like these you feel you’re going to explode. This is a scenario that has repeated itself since the beginning of time. Ever wonder what the prescribed remedy was back a 100 years ago? How about even further?

Ancient Egyptian physician didn’t have carbonated beverages, but they had something very close. If you are desperate for relief from that bloated, urge to regurgitate feeling, you can go for a similar cure. A glass of club soda will do the trick.

Or if that isn’t available, try the early Egyptian remedy: Baking soda in a small glass of apple vinegar, diluted with water, if you like. The ancient remedy also included peppermint, a remedy for upset stomachs.

There a lot of natural remedies that can work for heartburn. And this a good thing to know, because an aging population is taking more medications. By retirement the average is 4 to 6 meds a day. Those in the medical field are concerned because the chance of interaction or mix up increases greatly at this level. Over the counter meds complicate things even more.

This is what makes natural remedies so appealing. Many heartburn attacks have been rescued by something as benign as a bowl of fruit. Food remedies, incorporated into the daily meal plan, offer a very low risk of complication. A banana, for instance, has:
Potassium - 192 mg
Phosphorus - 79 mg
Calcium - 1.5 mg

A cantaloupe (medium wedge) has:
Potassium - 213 mg
Phosphorus - 12 mg
Calcium - 8 mg

A kiwi (1 cup):
Potassium - 588 mg
Phosphorus - 71 mg
Calcium - 46 mg
Magnesium - 53 mg

While an antacid may be handy, the effect on the body’s chemistry is not the same as a banana. In fact, an antacid could trigger the production of more stomach acid.

For heartburn, the simple answer is food - good foods and bad foods. Melons, fruits and berries are the good foods. And so are vegetables with color, like green beans, acorn squash, artichokes and avocados.

All these alkaloids play an important role in balancing body chemistry, and they can be found in your supermarket

So spend more time in the produce aisle, selecting fresh vegetables and fruits that will provided alkaloids your body needs to bring a return to good balance. Some recommendations are that this should be about 30-70 ratio, with fruits and vegetables being 70 percent and the 30 percent made up of protein and carbohydrates. But fruits and vegetables are not along in this heartburn treatment, there are very useful herbs, teas and juices that can heal and prevent heartburn. Heartburn, it’s about balance. It’s about eating healthy.

Curing heartburn can have benefits for those trying to lose weight and improve the immune system. A good reason to start today.
