Curing Heartburn or Acid Indigestion?

How many people, I wonder, laying there in bed asking themselves, “Is it heartburn or indigestion?” What do I do? How do I cure it?

Not a good question either way; if it’s indigestion today it could be heartburn tomorrow. After all, heartburn is easily a matter of habit, making routine overindulge one of the big reasons for heartburn discomfort.

So how does one tell the difference between the two? The clinical definition for heartburn is episodes of twice a week or more. My own thought is that if you are carrying around antacids in your pocket, you have problem. Antacids is not a cure for heartburn, it is only temporary relief for something caused by acid escaping from the stomach.

It’s a problem because heartburn attacks mean that repetitive events of digestive acid are eroding the lining outside the stomach. As long as it stays in the stomach it safe but once leaks out it’s in an alien environment . Except for the stomach, the rest of the body operates at a much different acid level, essentially making it ill equipped to handle such a low pH number. Even vapors from belching can harmful. If this is your condition then consider finding a heartburn cure.

In addition to meal size, heartburn is problem that is usually caused by food - what kind we eat, how much and time of day. Which means that we can correct the problem by changing these things.

Here are some examples of taking positive action:

* Food portion - simply eat less at each setting. If you are served more than you know to be right for you, use you fork to divide off a healthy portion.

* Preparing food - teeth are designed rip, tear and crush. Use them for what they are intended. There is no prize for finishing a meal in the shortest time. What you saved by wolfing it down adds double in stomach processing time.

* Posture - if you are overweight the stomach is pushed out of alignment and being crowded. Add to that the fact that every time you breathe the diaphragm is pressing down. Good posture is helpful to the stomach.

* Food choices - processed foods dominate the supermarket shelves. It might help if everyone put a copy of the recommended daily nutritional requirements on their fridge. Trying to meet these requirements will probably be more of a challenge then you thought.

* Think calcium - this mineral plays a very important role in the body’s chemistry; from heartburn relief to healthy bones and teeth. You will only find it in plant foods and dairy products.

In your list of priorities heartburn deserves a high consideration. Just because the pain can be muted with antacids doesn’t mean everything is all right. Make a resolution, whatever time of year it is, to look for a natural heartburn cure. Why not change to healthy food lifestyle, not only will you be better off without the antacids but you should benefit from stable energy levels and better weight control. Curing heartburn brings with it many pleasant surprises.
