The Silly Subtle Law of Attraction
I just returned from a “Peace Conference” in Ashland, Oregon
where I gave a talk about the importance of “being peace” in order to
“experience peace” in your life. The speech is titled “Be the Peace You Wish to
See in the World.”
One
of my favorite tag lines is from Gandhi when he tells us, “You must be the
change you wish to see in the world.” I use this all the time and it is at the
end of all my email messages. It is so simple but succinct in relaying the idea
that whatever you desire in your life is there when you start “being it.”
You
can only “experience” what you are being because that is the very definition of
what having an experience is. If you are not being it you are certainly not
experiencing it. I like to put it this way, “Your beingness creates your
doingness.”
Whatever
you end up doing you are doing it because of the state of being you are in at
the time. You don’t “do” happy, first you “be” happy and then you do happy
things. It is pretty easy to tell what state of being you are in by what you are
doing. If you are cheating on your golf score you are “being a cheater.” If you
give the panhandler on the street a five dollar bill, you are “being
compassionate.”
Your
beingness creates your doingness.
So
this is the concept I was talking about at the peace conference. You can only
bring peace to the world if you are first “being peace” yourself. Everything
starts with you. You are the example to the world of whatever it is that you are
“being.” And, of course, because we are all interconnected in this marvelous
game called “Life on Planet Earth” every state of being that we choose affects
everything else on the game board of life.
You
can’t just go to conferences and be “for peace” and “anti-war.” You must “be
peace” in order to experience peace. So in order to make this point to my
audience I also had to introduce “the Law of Attraction” because the Law of
Attraction tells us that you bring into your life that which you put your
attention on.
Here
is where the discussion got a little sticky and it is actually one of the main
reasons that I accepted the offer to speak at this conference. My observation is
that most of the people who go to “Peace Rallies and Peace Conferences” want to
live in a world that is at peace. Unfortunately most of the attendees are
putting a great deal of attention on the evening news and reading their
newspapers religiously in order to be as current as possible on the status of
the war and what forces are at work to end the war and bring peace to the world.
The
Law of Attraction tells us that by focusing so much of their attention on news
of the war, in the name of peace, what they are actually doing is perpetuating
the war with their focused attention on it. That is the way the Law of
Attraction works. You bring into your life that which you put your attention on.
In
my talk I made it very clear that you must put your attention on what you do
want and take your attention away from what you don’t want. If you want peace
you need to put your attention on peace and if you don’t want war you must take
your attention off of war.
The
logical solution is to stop watching news on the television and stop reading the
news in the newspaper. The logical solution is to put your attention on being
the peace you wish to see in the world and stop putting you attention on the war
that you hate.
Can
you see the quandary for many of the people at this conference? The Law of
Attraction can be very subtle of times but it is an immutable law. It works all
the time every time. You bring into your life that which you put your attention
on.
We
all want to live with inner peace and world peace. If this is truly what you
want to experience in your life then you have to stop putting your attention on
the evening news that does nothing but keep you immersed in perpetuating the
war.
Often
on the spiritual path we forget that we are creating our own world with the
thoughts we think, the words we speak and the actions we take but in actuality
you can only create your own life experiences. My experience tells me that you
can live with inner peace and world peace if that is what you choose to create
in your reality.
I
know this because that is my experience. I don’t watch the news or read the
newspaper because it does not serve me in the life that I have chosen to create.
I live in a world of peace, joy and love because that is what I put my
attention.
The
Law of Attraction works because it is an immutable law but you need to
understand how it works so that you can use it to create the life of your
deepest intentions and desires.
