Unexpected Treasure
One of my favorite
authors,
Sanaya Roman, who wrote
Personal Power Through Awareness.said,
"You never do anything that
is not in some way an attempt to bring more light into your life."
In our society, we often
ignore what doesn’t feel good, numbing out instead with
entertainment in the form of work, movies, books, drugs, alcohol or
food. Many people never
examine their darker side, the challenges or innermost beliefs that
may hold them back which only prevents them from fully experiencing
the love, joy, peace and beauty that we each deserve.
Debbie Ford, author of
The Dark Side of the Light
Chasers says, “When we
don't look at our own ‘shadows’ we miss wonderful opportunities to
grow, and to accelerate our growth by leaps and bounds. When we dare
to take a risk and to explore our shadows, we build courage and
faith. As a result of our efforts, we experience a sense of
release-igniting personal and spiritual empowerment.”
Both the dark and the light, the good and the bad, our
strengths and our weaknesses make up who we are.
I spent many years only
embracing the better parts of myself despite the many spiritual
workshops I attended, and books I read.
When we are able to face the darker aspects of ourselves,
look at negative thinking that holds us back and feel the pain that
we never fully expressed, we are able to embrace the essence of who
we are as human beings. Experiencing profound grief after the death
of my mother, I began looking even deeper for solutions to my pain.
Once I was able to see my
shadow side, I was able to begin peeling off the layers.
In a twelve-step program, I
was able to acknowledge both my divinity and humanity, examine my
life, take a personal inventory, and let in more light.
It was then that I began to acknowledge and finally accept
all parts of me and truly connect with my Higher Self, God or
whatever name you wish to call it.
Out of a strong desire to
let back in some light and happiness into my life, I was able to
find a treasure chest of spiritual qualities I could nurture from
within. These inner gems became my daily beacon of strength, wisdom
and guidance. With my Higher Self as my guide I continue learning
how to understand myself at a deeper level which allows me to shift
my beliefs and feelings and take inspired action that serves my
highest and best good.
The greatest blessing of
all is getting the opportunity to take what has worked for me and
share it with others in the form of my writing, talks and classes. I
am grateful every day to my Higher Power that guides, nurtures and
sustains me, thank you God!
